Wrestling is an ancient martial art that uses grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. A wrestling bout is a physical competition, generally between two people, who attempt to gain and maintain a superior position. Wrestling is one of the oldest of martial arts with references to it as early as the Iliad that recounts the Trojan War in the 13th or 12th century BC. There are a wide range of styles with varying rules with both traditional historic and modern styles. Wrestling techniques have been incorporated into other martial arts as well as military hand-to-hand combat systems.

How can professional wrestling be considered a sport?
Q. I hate to break it to you die hard pro wrestling fans (not really) but pro wrestling is totally staged. The main focus of pro wrestling is to make money and entertain while other types of wrestling focuses on the athletic competition between the two competitors. Being a former wrestler in high school, I think it's a depressing to see these "professional wrestlers" put such a horrible face to a noble sport. They aren't "professional" and they certainly aren't "wrestlers". They are a bunch of idiots that put on some redneck soap opera for the entertainment of people who have no respect for the real sport of wrestling.

A. Though it is indeed a show. These "wrestlers" still need to perform a certain level of athleticism to be able to make the move that they do. I think that it's more of a show rather than a sport. But what makes it palatable to its fans is the drama and the other storylines prior to the match. But you have to be physically fit to do what they do.

How can I start cutting weight from wrestling?
Q. I am currently a junior in high school. I"m 5'5 130 at the moment and plan to wrestling at the 119 weight class. The season starts approximately two weeks (from 11/13). How can I lose the weight in the most healthiest way possible. Please save me the struggle of yo-yo-ing during the season by gaining and losing weight like crazy. Help me asap.

A. I am a junior right now too, and i do agree that you need to avoid yo yoing at all costs.. it kills your stamina and your strength. keep in mind that in this point of time its the calories that matter. make sure its less than 1,500 calories a day.. start running after school for a half hour or so a day. and make sure what you do eat for calories is the good stuff.. egg whites are the best, you can eat as many of those as you want.

What is a board called that has wrestling weight classes on it and has hooks you can put kids' names on?
Q. I am a new wrestling coach and I have seen this board that has a list of weight classes across the top organized into columns. It then has hooks where you can place wrestlers names (on small tags). We want to use it as a visual way to organize our wrestlers into weight classes for challenge matchs/ to separate varsity from JV wrestlers. I could probably make one out of wood and nails but I was wondering where you could buy them or what they're called. Any help would be appreciated.

A. I did a couple searches and found nothing. Sorry. But maybe call a local gym and ask them or an online store where you buy wrestling equipment. You can usually search their inventory, maybe youll find something.
