From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The Wehrmacht (German pronunciation: [ˈveːɐ̯maxt] ( listen) Defence Force) was the unified armed forces of Germany from 1935 to 1945. It consisted of the Heer (army), the Kriegsmarine (navy) and the Luftwaffe (air force). The Waffen-SS, the combat branch of the SS (the Nazi Party's paramilitary organization), became the de facto fourth branch of the Wehrmacht, as it expanded from three regiments to 38 divisions by 1945. Although the SS was autonomous and existed in parallel to the Wehrmacht, the Waffen-SS field units were placed under the operational control of the Supreme High Command of the Armed Forces (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, OKW) or the Supreme High Command of the Army (Oberkommando des Heeres, OKH). I think the German troops stationed in Paris were predominantly in the Wehrmacht, correct? Did the German military set up barracks or did they "commandeer" housing from the civilians? Or, did they stay in hotels? Thanks! Great answer so far, Gino's Mom! A few further questions, if anyone knows: Who fled Paris? Was it most of the city, or only the rich, the poor? The Germans stayed in the best hotels ,palaces and big houses of the city. They walk in and confiscated it,if somebody was living in it they were given the choice to live in one or two rooms tops or get out. I know this so well because this happened to my family in Brussels and others living in Northern France. Germans did not ask they just took. If you were lucky you had a civilized officer who would be kind and bring you chocolate,coffee and other good stuff.A few of them became even friends with the people who lived in the house but those were not SS or Gestapo they were Army and were in the war because they had no choice. First of all not all the Ethnicities you mention were incorporated in the regular troops some were mere Hilfstruppen some were organized in the legions like the French Waffen SS legion and not really part of the Wehrmacht. Also many of these people were residents of occupied countries and not all of them joined the forces on free will but were forced to help the Germans.
