There is almost no advantage to manned space travel, although I still support it. It is mostly a political ploy to say "we've been further than you". In the far future it may become important to colonize outside of the Earth. Unmanned space travel is much safer because, of course, noone dies if anything goes wrong up there. Also, the spacecraft can be much more efficient because it doesn't have to propel the weight of the humans and carry all their life-support materials. Having manned space travel does indeed allow for repairs that would be much more difficult to do with machines (or impossible), but is not worth the risks involved.
