What do/did you do with the babies umbilical cord after it has fallen off?
Q. Hi there, I am currently 37 weeks preganant and i was wondering what should be done with the babies umbilical cord after it has fallen away from the babies stomach? What did other mothers do? Did you bury it, keep it, throw it away, have it incenerated or are you expected to give it to your doctor for some reason? I am just curious because i have no idea what to do with the umbilical cord (not the after birth, the bit that stays attached to the baby until it dries up and falls off) after it has fallen off.

A. I kept it in a special memory box with all the cards that I'd got with gifts. Along with the litle hospital bands. Its not actually disgusting.. just a little piece of rawhide with the peg attached...and it dries very quickly. Its no use to the doctors usually. And good on you for asking. I didn't know very much before my first was born and was too scared to ask...as a result I bumbled my way through alot and made heaps and heaps of little mistakes. btw Congratulations. ;)

How do you treat umbilical hernias?
Q. My 9 month old daughter has an umbilical hernia. where her belly button sticks out( lick a sore thumb). I have tried several remedies even taping her tummy. Nothing has worked. They do not even too much sell anything except a piece of cloth which you tie around ( and her belly button still sticks out. How can I go about helping it to go down without causing tape burns or too tight wrapping?

A. Most studies show that "binding" the umbilical hernia does nothing, it will resolve on its own or it won't depending on the severity and other factors. Treatment When the orifice is small (< 1 or 2cm), 90% close within 3 years (some sources state 85% of all umbilical hernias, regardless of size[2]), and if these hernias are asymptomatic, reducible, and don't enlarge, no surgery is needed (and in other cases it must be considered). However, in some communities mothers routinely push the small bulge back in and tape a coin over the palpable hernia hole until closure occurs. This practice is not medically recommended as there is a small risk of trapping a loop of bowel under part of the coin resulting in a small area of ischemic bowel.… [cont.]
