A revolution (from the Latin revolutio, "a turn around") is a fundamental change in power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time. Aristotle described two types of political revolution:

  1. Complete change from one constitution to another
  2. Modification of an existing constitution.

Revolutions have occurred through human history and vary widely in terms of methods, duration, and motivating ideology. Their results include major changes in culture, economy, and socio-political institutions.

Scholarly debates about what does and does not constitute a revolution center around several issues. Early studies of revolutions primarily analyzed events in European history from a psychological perspective, but more modern examinations include global events and incorporate perspectives from several social sciences, including sociology and political science. Several generations of scholarly thought on revolutions have generated many competing theories and contributed much to the current understanding of this complex phenomenon.

How many revolutions does the wheel make?
Q. A flywheel with a diameter of 1.70 m is rotating at an angular speed of 260 rev/min. The wheel's angular speed is increased to 1000 rev/min in 60 s. How many revolutions does the wheel make during this 60 s acceleration?

A. First off, 60s is one minute, so the the question is asking about a 1 minute duration. If you plot revolutions per minute on the y-axis and duration of time in minutes on the x-axis, you will have a line that starts at (0,260) and goes to (1,1000). The area enclosed between the x-axis and the line would be the total number of revolutions (units would be rev/min * min = rev). This would be analogous to a v vs t plot. The area under the curve in a v vs t plot is the displacement and is given by: dx = vi*dt + 1/2*a*dt^2 The same can be said of the rotational velocity and rotational acceleration. Let's call the initial angular velocity, omega_i; number of revolutions, revs; and the angular acceleration, alpha, then: revs = omega_i*dt + 1/ [cont.]
