Research can be defined as the search for knowledge or as any systematic investigation to establish facts. The primary purpose for applied research (as opposed to basic research) is discovering, interpreting, and the development of methods and systems for the advancement of human knowledge on a wide variety of scientific matters of our world and the universe. Research can use the scientific method, but need not do so.

Scientific research relies on the application of the scientific method, a harnessing of curiosity. This research provides scientific information and theories for the explanation of the nature and the properties of the world around us. It makes practical applications possible. Scientific research is funded by public authorities, by charitable organizations and by private groups, including many companies. Scientific research can be subdivided into different classifications according to their academic and application disciplines.

Artistic research, also seen as 'practice-based research', can take form when creative works are considered both the research and the object of research itself. It is the debatable body of thought which offers an alternative to purely scientific methods in research in its search for knowledge and truth.

Historical research is embodied in the scientific method.

The phrase my research is also used loosely to describe a person's entire collection of information about a particular subject.

What type of scientists research muscular dystrophy?
Q. I'm doing a project on it in school and we're supposed to find out how much money we need in order to research the disease of our choice. (We're not really going to research it, it's a simulation.) I want to know what type of scientist I'm going to need so then I can find out how much they get paid. Do I need a microbiologist, or a geneticist? And, it would be helpful if you told me their yearly salary. Anything else on researching muscular dystrophy would be great!

A. I would suggest checking with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, they have done this for decades and have gotten not a lot closer to finding a "cure", but they do provide much assistance to the families of those affected.

How do I know what research design to use on a Psychology research paper?
Q. I am writing a research proposal comparing the IQ of two different groups. There is no intervention or treatment, just comparing the groups as is...ANY help, as soon as possible would be GREATLY appreciated!

A. Such psychological research would most likely require surveying (to obtain demographical data to aid in developing conclusions on the two groups' similarities and differences) and testing to determine their actual IQ. I imagine this could include using experimental procedures to test IQ, but the more traditional approach to testing IQ is using the appropriate test to survey the two groups.

What would be a good research paper topic with any theme about war, religion, history?
Q. I need a research topic for a collegiate level research paper for my english class. I have interest in war, religion, and/or its effect on the history of a certain place. If not, what other social issues could I talk about in the Philippines. Hopefully there would be a lot of sources so I could make a long one because this would be a major paper. Thanks!

A. Well, religion might be good topic, as the Philippines have a major religion: Catholic. This could make your research easier. On that research, you could discuss about the first time that religion came, how it was spread, the figures behind this spreading Other topic is to make a research about their language, Tagalog. This will be interesting because this paper is from English class. So, you might make about the comparing how was the English spread and how was the Tagalog spread.
