High fidelity—or hi-fi—reproduction is a term used by home stereo listeners and home audio enthusiasts (audiophiles) to refer to high-quality reproduction of sound or images, to distinguish it from the poorer quality sound produced by inexpensive audio equipment. Ideally, high-fidelity equipment has minimal amounts of noise and distortion and an accurate frequency response. One effort to standardize the term was the 1973 German Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) standard DIN 45500. DIN 45 500 approval was intended to provide audio equipment buyers with reassurance that their equipment was capable of good quality reproduction. In theory, only stereo equipment that met the standard could bear the words 'hi-fi'. This standard was well intentioned but only mildly successful; in practice, the term was widely misapplied to audio products that did not remotely approach the DIN basis specifications. Today's Home Theater minimum requirements for surround sound are Dolby Digital capable decoder and multichannel amplifier for 5 speakers (front L, center, front R, rear L, rear R) and 1 subwoofer. Apple Hi-Fi doesn't support that at all. Anyway you can still use it connected to your TV to hear the sound through the Apple Hi-Fi instead of the TV speakers. Presuming your television is vaguely modern (say 12 years or younger) you should have an audio output on the back, which you can plug in to your hifi just as you would any other source component (like a cd player or an FM Tuner, etc). Depending on your television, the volume control for your television may still be active, but if it's an option, it's best to disable the TV volume and have your volume controlled strictly by the hifi (just as you do with the other sources). Most TVs will have stereo outputs, but some older sets will only have a single mono output. If that's the case you can use an inexpensive "Y" adaptor so sound will come out of both of your HiFi speakers. Q. Turntable is Numark USBTT, and connects to my old Aiwa midi hi-fi easily as that has stereo inputs (but the CD has stopped working and we need to get a smaller hi-fi!), however all the modern mini hi-fis in our price range (upto 250) only seem to have a single line-in input! (looking at the Sony CMT CPZ1 DAB model specifically) Can they be connected? I'm hoping there's a cable/connector? Have looked on maplins but its hard when you're not that techy!
