"Pronunciation" refers to the way a word or a language is spoken, or the manner in which someone utters a word. If someone is said to have "correct pronunciation," then it refers to both within a particular dialect.

A word can be spoken in different ways by various individuals or groups, depending on many factors, such as: the area in which they grew up, the area in which they now live, if they have a speech or voice disorder, their ethnic group, their social class, or their education.

Linguistic terminology

Syllables are counted as units of sound (phones) that they use in their language. The branch of linguistics which studies these units of sound is phonetics. Phones which play the same role are grouped together into classes called phonemes; the study of these is phonemics or phonematics or phonology. Phones as components of articulation are usually described using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

Q. How do you pronounce these words that are often mis-pronounced? Or perhaps they are just said differntly depending on where they are from. So tell me how you say them and where you are from? 1. Salmon A. (sah-mahn) or B. (Sahl-mohn) 2. Pecan A. (Pea-cohn) or B. (Pea-cahn) 3. Caramel A. (Cahr-ah-mehl) or B. (Care-ah-mehl) Thanks! You can just list the numbers and A or B as your answer. How is the letter G pronounced in Modern Swedish when if comes at the end of a word?
Q. Most specifically, I was wondering about the word "Vintersorg". I know it translates as "Wintersorrow" and that the "sorg" element is cognate with Modern English "Sorrow" and that in Old English a terminal like this would be pronounced like a Modern English Y. I'm very tempted to pronounce it this way in Modern Swedish but I'm not sure if that's correct or not.

A. That's correct. In words ending with -org (like sorg = sorrow, korg = basket and so on) the -g is pronounced like English y (non-vocalic) in "young". And the same in the name of my homecity Goeteborg (English: Gothenburg). In most word endings, though, it is pronounced as the hard g in English "guitar" (like in lag = law, blyg = shy, farlig = dangerous, and so on), although in adjectives ending with -ig, it is often not pronounced at all, so for example "farlig" is commonly pronounced [FAR-ly], just in clear pronounciation [FAR-ligg]

Where should I go to learn how words are pronounced?
Q. I'm looking for a guide to learn how a word is pronounced depending upon its structure. I'm a fiction/fantasy writer and want to know how to modify a word or name so it sounds the way I want it to. I don't know where to go, and I'm not sure what it is that I'm looking for in the first place.

A. The online Merriam-Webster dictionary has audio word pronunciations next to the word you choose. That may be a good starting point for you.
