The concept of personhood (who is a person within a society) is the fundamental component of any selective concept of people. A distinction is maintained in philosophy and law between the notions "human being", or "man", and "person". The former refers to the species, while the latter refers to a rational agent (see, for example, John Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding II 27 and Immanuel Kant's Introduction to the Metaphysic of Morals). Central issues of interest to people are the understanding of the human condition and the meaning of life, and survival. Religion, philosophy, and science show or represent modes and aspects of inquiry which attempt to investigate and understand the nature, behavior, and purpose of people. Sociology, economics, and politics represent modes by which people investigate how to maximize a collective survival strategy.

Why do people get annoyed at others who speak their language?
Q. Hi, I'm from England and I often hear from some of my fellow Englishmen that they hate they way Americans spell and a pronounce words in the English language (I find those people who bash Americans for these to be ignorant morons). Anyway, I'd like to know if this sort of thing happens between other countries sharing the same language. Like, do do some Spanish people complain about the way Mexicans speak their language? Or what about people from Portugal? Do they get annoyed with people from Brazil? Sorry, about that. Take away that "a" inbetween *and pronounce*. My bad :( I have problems with Dyslexia. So, I know what it's like to bugged because of spelling.

A. Romanian is the official language in both Moldova and Romania (those are in Eastern Europe). Romanians often make fun of the way we speak "their" language. There are entire sites dedicated to jokes about us and our dialect. What sucks is that we seem to have developed an inferiority complex because of that :( So, yeah, it's all over the world, not just in the large countries. You know how everyone's uncomfortable with stuff that's even a tiny bit different from what they're used to. Then again, it's understandable in some cases, like when it creates mutual unintelligibility. Take the Scottish dialect for example. Since I'm used to the more widespread American and British English, I think Scottish English is completely crazy :) I tried… [cont.]

What causes old people to become childish in mentality?
Q. When they get older , many older people become childish thinking. Thinking about very trivial things and act like little children about things. What is the cause of this? I know it is a form of seniality , but could sombody explain what is happening in their body or brain? Also does this happen to people , say in their 30's as well. Or maybe some people just never really "grow up"? Why do some people who should be married and having adult life, still behave as little children? Something similar to above?

A. Dementia - the higher centers of the brain - the cerbral cortex - become dysfunctional as people age (esp if they have alzhemiers) and that is why people become childish. if people in their 30's behave like that, it usually means they have a personality problem

How many people are off the planet at one time?
Q. What do you reckon... the average number of people/ % pf people who are flying somewhere across the planet at any given instant? I just wanna know what kinda numbers of our population are not on the planet that they live upon at any give time... How many people are not on this planet every second of the day?
Asked by Icarus - Sun Sep 17 16:45:18 2006 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. An infinitesimal fraction, actually. If there were 10,000 aircraft airborne at any given moment (probably a bit high) and each had a average of 250 people on board, that would be 2.5 million people. With about 5 billion inhabitants, that would only be 5 one-hundredths of 1 percent (0.05%) of the Earth's population in the air at one time. Here's a sobering thought: If all 10,000 of those aircraft were blown up by terrorists at the same instant, we'd never notice the population drop looking at it from a global perspective. The loss in population would be recovered in less than 2 weeks.

Quotes about people

Sourced

  • A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it.
  • Show me a man or a woman alone and I'll show you a saint. Give me two and they'll fall in love. Give me three and they'll invent the charming thing we call 'society'. Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home.
    • Glen Bateman, The Stand (C&U), 3rd paragraph of Chapter 42, by Stephen King
  • I judge people by what they might be,—not are, nor will be.
  • The people will live on. The learning and blundering people will live on.
    • Carl Sandburg (1878–1967), American poet. The People, Yes (1936)
