An observatory is a location used for observing terrestrial and/or celestial events. Astronomy, climatology/meteorology, geology, oceanography and volcanology are examples of disciplines for which observatories have been constructed. Historically, observatories were as simple as containing an astronomical sextant (for measuring the distance between stars) or Stonehenge (which has some alignments on astronomical phenomena). From Google News Search: "observatories" Do observatories have a way to edit time exposures to remove transient noise? Q. Let's say the big telescope at Palomar or Kitt Peak was making a long exposure of a nebula. Unfortunately, during the exposure a commercial jet happens to fly across the field of view. After the exposure is completed, an astronomer discovers this source of extraneous light. Can the recorded data be edited to remove the airplane, or is the job ruined? Asked by jondalar469 - Sat Sep 6 14:56:15 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. They don't use film anymore. They use digital sensors, just like a digital camera. A time exposure is really thousands of individual electronic snapshots of an object saved to a computer. They use a computer program to lay these images on top of each other, it's called stacking. The program chooses only the best images and rejects the bad ones. Atmospheric conditions are constantly shifting and give more bad images than a rare aircraft flying past. Q. i would like to get to do scientific research or work with those who do research as like an intern but i have no collage or any special skill, except my curiosity and my quick learning ability. any tips or suggestions will be much appreciated well any help of any kind is welcomed. A place with a public outreach is a good place to start, like a science museum or an observatory offering public tours. Show them you are interested, competent, reliable, and willing to work. Then ask for deeper involvement in research areas. If you show yourself valuable enough, it could turn into a paid position. Even if it can't, ask the people who now know you to write letters of recommendation. That lets you establish your reputation more quickly at another place. It's also great for a college application, to show you are interested and willing to work at it. Obviously educate yourself. Q. What are some of the world's best observatories? Asked by mtb801 - Tue Aug 28 17:56:28 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Keck in Hawaii is technically very advanced with a steerable Multy segmented arrayed installation that can compensate for optical and atmospheric aberrations. It's combined electronically steered mirror array on two units, both are individually larger and combined is better than four times the capacity of Palomar, the old time world heavyweight champ. And yet it's arrayed mirrors are simpler and in relative terms easier and less costly to build. It's also situated at very high altitude, and in a relatively isolated and aerodynamically stable environment. It's widely regarded that installations such as Keck have since surpassed the Hubble Space telescope considerably in their precision effectiveness and overall capability. … [cont.] Answered by max c - Tue Aug 28 19:40:28 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "observatories" |
