GNU Free Documentation License What does nuclear radiation really do to living organisms? Q. My question has to do with popular cultures portrayal of radiation. We are all aware of the effects fiction usually describes: growth of extra limbs, superpowers, zombification, extreme mutation (turning people into giant monsters), induced cannibalism and insanity, etc. Are any of these things true? I've been playing Fallout 3 and almost all of these mechanics are present. What would the effects of nuclear fallout really be? Asked by James S - Mon Feb 16 10:18:58 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. None of the 'popular culture' symptoms of radiation exposure are true. The most likely result of an exposure to radiation below about 25 RAD is nothing - your body has the capability to repair damage at that level or below. Above 25 RAD to about 400 RAD, blood chemistry changes - would be detectable, then the damage would start to be systemic - your immune system would break down - at 450 RAD, about 50% of the population would die without treatment - mostly from opportunistic infections because of the breakdown of your immune system - above about 1000 RAD, most people would die - again of infections (even benign bacteria would kill you - as your immune system couldn't keep it in check.) Above 5000 RAD, your nervous system dies - it will… [cont.] Answered by Steve E - Mon Feb 16 11:09:05 2009 What are the candidates positions on nuclear energy? Don't we need to build new nuclear power plants now? Q. In order to lessen our dependence on oil. From what I understand, it is impossible to find any spot on Earth that would be seismically inactive for the next 10,000 years. Aren't the Democrats just pandering to the Nevada vote? This should not deter the development of nuclear energy, as waste can be stored if it is "vitrified" (encased in borosilicate glass.) Asked by Zelda Hunter - Wed Jan 16 13:59:51 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Finally, someone asks a real question about the campaigns. Too bad I haven't had the chance to research this one yet. But as far as I know, most Democrats are pushing to make oil more affordable, while most Republicans are urging to let the market do its job, so from the looks of it, we're probably not going to see too many alternatives from either side, including nuclear. I do know that Mitt Romney is concerned with environmental health, and along with Giuliani, they're both concerned with global warming. The democrats are very passionate about the environment and the dependency on foreign oil, but they lost their best candidate in this area, Bill Richardson, who was at the top of my list. Richardson has been on governance boards for… [cont.] Answered by dnbotte - Wed Jan 16 14:17:56 2008 What is the best way to completely eliminate nuclear arms and nuclear energy?
Q. If you were a leader of a country and wanted to eliminate all nuclear weapons and energy, what would be a few of your first priorities on your to do list? Asked by Matthew T - Sat Jul 1 01:27:53 2006 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. First priority: WISEDOM in the leadership of USA, UK, France ,Germany and Russia about war and armament, far far greater than what we have now. Wisdom of the Churchill/Roosevelt or Reagan/Thatcher level or above. You need to pick a recipient who will TAKE all the nuclear arms, oh, say, the Queen of England. Pick the wrong recipient and this whole idea is a FIASCO. Pick the wrong organization (like the UN, a whorehouse for the world's remaining dictators and despots) and nothing good will happen, either. You need to get her to agree and come up with a central location for them, like the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. Then you need to get the governments of the world to agree to disarm and ship them there. This will take 30 to 50 years.
