From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite and is the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System. It is the largest natural satellite in the Solar System relative to the size of its planet, a quarter the diameter of Earth and 1/81 its mass, and is the second densest satellite after Io. It is in synchronous rotation with Earth, always showing the same face; the near side is marked with dark volcanic maria among the bright ancient crustal highlands and prominent impact craters. It is the brightest object in the sky after the Sun, although its surface is actually very dark, with a similar reflectance to coal. Its prominence in the sky and its regular cycle of phases have since ancient times made the Moon an important cultural influence on language, the calendar, art and mythology. The Moon's gravitational influence produces the ocean tides and the minute lengthening of the day. The Moon's current orbital distance, about thirty times the diameter of the Earth, causes it to be the same size in the sky as the Sun—allowing the Moon to cover the Sun precisely in total solar eclipses. The Moon is the only celestial body on which humans have made a manned landing. While the Soviet Union's Luna programme was the first to reach the Moon with unmanned spacecraft, the United States' NASA Apollo program achieved the only manned missions to date, beginning with the first manned lunar orbiting mission by Apollo 8 in 1968, and six manned lunar landings between 1969 and 1972—the first being Apollo 11 in 1969. These missions returned over 380 kg of lunar rocks, which have been used to develop a detailed geological understanding of the Moon's origins (it is thought to have formed some 4.5 billion years ago in a giant impact), the formation of its internal structure, and its subsequent history. Since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, the Moon has been visited only by unmanned spacecraft, notably by Soviet Lunokhod rovers. Since 2004, Japan, China, India, the United States, and the European Space Agency have each sent lunar orbiters. These spacecraft have contributed to confirming the discovery of lunar water ice in permanently shadowed craters at the poles and bound into the lunar regolith. Future manned missions to the Moon are planned but not yet underway; the Moon remains, under the Outer Space Treaty, free to all nations to explore for peaceful purposes. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Why is the moon not visible during the new moon phase? Q. The new moon phase is caused by the relative positions of Earth, the moon, and the sun. Why is the moon not visible during the new moon phase? A. the sunlight is not being reflected off the moon b. the far side of the moon is the only side visible c. the location of the moon is between eath and the sun d. Asked by Yenisbel Q - Mon Dec 29 19:37:34 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. c the location of the moon is between earth and the sun At new moon phase the moon is where the sun is (approx; as seen from earth) So, at night, there is no moon in the sky. And at day you get blinded by the sun when you would try to see the moon (-DON"T!) Sometimes there is a sun eclipse when the moon shadow falls onto the earth - only at new moon possible. Answered by M K - Mon Dec 29 23:14:30 2008 What causes the moon to appear larger on some nights than others? Q. When the moon is low on the horizon it often appears considerably larger than when it's high in the sky - what's the reason for this? Also, even from one night to the next the moon can appear to be a different size even when it's in approximately the same part of the sky regardless as to whether it's close to the horizon. Asked by Trevor - Sun Aug 6 05:42:10 2006 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. Good question, and good observation. You are correct. The moon does look larger or smaller at different times. There are three reasons for this. 1. The Moon looks larger depending on the orbital position. That is because it is about 5% closer when the Perigee occurs in alignment with the Earth and Sun. This can be at new or full phase. the effect is greatest when the Earth is nearest the Sun in January. 2. Atmospheric refraction. The rising full moon looks slightly larger because of atmospheric effects. But that is not the most important reason: 3. The human eye's potential for changing the eye's iris in response to light levels. The iris it the part of the eye behind the cornea. It has a hole in it that gets larger or smaller… [cont.] Answered by China Jon - Sun Aug 6 06:31:17 2006 What crater in the moon is the size of the yucatan peninsula?
Q. I need to know, for my astronomy class/lab. The instructor was talking about a crater that is about the size of the pininsula of yucatan. I then have to calculate the above dimensions and figure what is the diameter of the moon and see what I come up with. It's a school thing. I got to show the work. Anyone? The purpose of school is to learn and do the research yourself. I will give you these great tools to help you learn, but I will not just blindly tell you the answer so you can go play some place else.
