A. easy... 1) The captain decided to land even though it had just rained and there was thunderstorms around. This created static electricity in the air around Lakehurst N.J. Static electricity is NOT a friend of a hydrogen blimp (VERY flammable) 2) A blimp can land two ways, first to a tall tower that allows the blimp to discharge excess static electricity though the tower into the ground (safer during a storm). second way is to drop ropes to the ground and be pulled down by crews of men, this way does NOT discharge the static safely. The pilot chose the second method which is bad after a storm. 3) The pilot vented some hydrogen gas while coming in, basically like dumping gasoline onto a sparkplug, you get a fire when you mix static… [cont.]
