Fidelity is the quality of being faithful or loyal. Its original meaning regarded duty to a lord or a king, in a broader sense than the related concept of fealty. Both derive from the Latin word fidēlis (A III adjective), meaning "faithful or loyal"

In modern human relationships, the term can refer to sexual monogamy. In western culture this often means adherence to marriage vows, or of promises of exclusivity or monogamy, and an absence of adultery. However, some people do not equate fidelity in personal relationships with sexual or emotional monogamy. (For example, see polyamory and Open marriage.) Often, however, females in Shakespeare are associated with it in a negative sense, such as "She is with little fidelity". For example, Bertram accuses Helena of having "little fidelity" in All's Well That Ends Well.

Fidelity also denotes how accurate a copy is to its source. For example, a worn gramophone record will have a lower fidelity than one in good condition, and a recording made by a low budget record company in the early 20th century is likely to have significantly less audio fidelity than a good modern recording. In the 1950s, the terms "high fidelity" or "hi-fi" were popularized for equipment and recordings designed for more accurate sound reproduction, while "lo-fi" music aims for "authenticity" over perfect production. Similarly in electronics, fidelity refers to the correspondence of the output signal to the input signal, rather than sound.

In the fields of scientific modelling and simulation, fidelity refers to the degree to which a model or simulation reproduces the state and behaviour of a real world object, feature or condition. Fidelity is therefore a measure of the realism of a model or simulation. Simulation fidelity has also been described in the past as 'degree of similarity'.

The computer age has spawned the term Wi-Fi in reference to certain groups of wireless electronic devices. While the term Wi-Fi has been popularly taken to be an abbreviation of 'wireless fidelity', Wi-Fi is in fact a commercial brand owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance, and has nothing to do with fidelity as a concept.

What investment level does an investor have to be to enter Fidelity funds closed to new investors?
Q. I always understood there was a certain amount of funds which granted access to particular closed mutual funds in Fidelity such as the Contrafund. How much money do you need with Fidelity to gain access to these funds?

A. I'm afraid everyone else is right...closed means closed. ( Sorry I recommended FDIVX in my last answer...but if you look at Morningstar or Kiplingers, maybe you can find something similar ( so many funds are almost identical)...I really wish someone had a " tool" that would give you three or four " comparables" if you entered a fund symbol. I'm a Fidelity guy myself, but some other families are available through Fido with " no transaction fees"... or here's a couple of more in that international area: FIGRX and FOSFX... both Fidelity, both invested in major companies ( large caps)...but I think the FIGRX is more geared to " growth" than the Overseas fund. Check 'em out...they could really put a jolt into the portfolio for a few years...… [cont.]

Did you hear about the Fidelity information breach?
Q. It seems like the Fidelity information breach (an employee stole 2.3 million customer's records and sold them to a direct marketing company) wasn't well covered in the news- did you hear about it? From where?

A. I haven't seen anything. But these are so common now that people hardly pay attention any more.

will I have to copy my CDs in 2 formats so that I keep my fidelity and also able to use them on my mp3?
Q. I want to keep the highest fidelity of my music, so I copy them in uncompressed format. But I want to put them on my mp3 player also. media player i noticed automatically converts to mp3(or winamp files). Will I have to create two files for every CD? One uncompressed and one mp3? It seems to do otherwise is very time consuming.

A. No, You will need to buy an mp3 player that supports your uncompressed files and one that has a big hardrive. I have my favorite albums in lossless format and all the rest are convert to 256kbps AAC files just for space saving. I am not sure which MP3 players support lossless but it should be quite easy to find out. I do know that the iPod supports AAC lossless files so you might want to look into that as then you won't need to create two copies of every CD

Fidelity, or faithfulness, is a notion that, at its most abstract level, implies a truthful connection to a source or sources. Its original meaning dealt with loyalty and attentiveness to one's duty to a lord or a king, in a broader sense than the related concept of fealty. Both derive from the Latin word fidēlis (A III adjective), meaning "faithful or loyal".
