First launched in 1953, the American Redstone rocket (Redstone missile) was a direct descendant of the German V-2. Redstone was used for the first live nuclear missile tests by the United States. It was also referred to as the Redstone MRBM (medium range ballistic missile), although in the true sense of the definition within the United States Department of Defense of MRBM (a missile with a maximum range between 1,000 and 3,000 kilometres (620 and 1,900 mi)) this was a misnomer.

The Redstone missile was in active service with the U.S. Army from June 1958 to June 1964. Some Redstone missiles were modified in the mid to late 1960s for follow-on special test projects. For one such project the missiles were called Sparta rockets.

For its role as a US Army field artillery theater ballistic missile, Redstone earned the subtitle "the Army's Workhorse"; for its roles in non-military applications, the nickname "Old Reliable".

Redstone was developed by team of predominantly German rocket engineers who were relocated to the United States (Huntsville, Al) after World War II as part of Operation Paperclip.

Could i build a rocket from parts i get from a scrap yard, something that will get me into orbit?
Q. My friend has his own machine shop so the parts could be fixed up and made to fit together, i would base it on the old V-2 rockets or the Mercury Redstone rockets only a tad bit larger.

A. No. That would not be a feasible project. You need a multistage rocket to get into orbit. The whole fuel and ignition system is a bit more sophisticated than a model rocket. Have you ever been to the air and space museum? Look at some of the early rocket sections on display. I think you'll have second thoughts.

A. I don't know what you mean with "difficulties and successes". Both suffered from similar problems as all first generation rockets. The biggest successes of Atlas and Redstone had sure been the Mercury program, Atlas still lives on in it's current generation as Atlas V, while Redstone as military ballistic rocket got quickly replaced by others, currently the ATACMS fulfills the role as short range ballistic rocket for the Army (but thankfully no longer nuclear).
