First launched in 1953, the American Redstone rocket (Redstone missile) was a direct descendant of the German V-2. Redstone was used for the first live nuclear missile tests by the United States. It was also referred to as the Redstone MRBM (medium range ballistic missile), although in the true sense of the definition within the United States Department of Defense of MRBM (a missile with a maximum range between 1,000 and 3,000 kilometres (620 and 1,900 mi)) this was a misnomer. The Redstone missile was in active service with the U.S. Army from June 1958 to June 1964. Some Redstone missiles were modified in the mid to late 1960s for follow-on special test projects. For one such project the missiles were called Sparta rockets. For its role as a US Army field artillery theater ballistic missile, Redstone earned the subtitle "the Army's Workhorse"; for its roles in non-military applications, the nickname "Old Reliable". Redstone was developed by team of predominantly German rocket engineers who were relocated to the United States (Huntsville, Al) after World War II as part of Operation Paperclip. From Google News Search: "Redstone (rocket)" Could i build a rocket from parts i get from a scrap yard, something that will get me into orbit? Q. My friend has his own machine shop so the parts could be fixed up and made to fit together, i would base it on the old V-2 rockets or the Mercury Redstone rockets only a tad bit larger. Asked by Hellbent 2.0 system reboot - Sun Dec 30 10:59:40 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. No. That would not be a feasible project. You need a multistage rocket to get into orbit. The whole fuel and ignition system is a bit more sophisticated than a model rocket. Have you ever been to the air and space museum? Look at some of the early rocket sections on display. I think you'll have second thoughts. Answered by Brant - Sun Dec 30 11:10:55 2007 New Englanders/Midwesterners: How much are you willing to pay per pound for sugar? Gulf of Mex. Crude? Q. Answered by nonya - Thu Dec 17 12:22:27 2009 Was the first American Satellite - Explorer 1 - launched into space by the Redstone Fire Control Truck?
Q. The rocket that carried the satellite into orbit was an elongated Redstone missile, and the first Redstone Fire Control Truck was completed a few days prior to January 31, 1958 and shipped from the Chrysler Missile Division in Sterling Heights, Michigan to Huntsville, Alabama. The Satellite when launched sat atop the elongated Redstone Rocket - called the Jupiter C - the Jupiter C differed from the Redstone Rocket by being elongated to contain the additional fuel to reach outer space. The guidance and control components of both the Jupiter C and the Redstone rockets were therefore identical. The satellite was released by telemetry from the Jupiter C once the fuel was spent. Question is: Was the Jupiter C checked out during the day and… [cont.] Asked by Tiger - Sun Nov 25 16:52:43 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. 10:48 pm EST on January 31, 1958.
