Competition is a contest between individuals, groups, nations, animals, etc. for territory, a niche, or a location of resources... It arises whenever two or more parties strive for a goal which cannot be shared. Competition occurs naturally between living organisms which co-exist in the same environment. For example, animals compete over water supplies, food, and mates, etc. Humans compete for water, food, and mates, though when these needs are met deep rivalries often arise over the pursuit of wealth, prestige, and fame. Business is often associated with competition as most companies are in competition with at least one other firm over the same group of customers.

Competition may give incentives for self-improvement.... For example, if two watchmakers are competing for business, they will hopefully improve their products and service to increase sales. If one watchmaker is more responsive to the needs of consumers, this watchmaker will flourish. If birds compete for a limited water supply during a drought, the more suited birds will survive to reproduce and improve the population.

Rivals (similarly matched competitors well known to each other) will often refer to their competitors as "the competition". This is especially true of archrivals (primary, longstanding rivals, often the best in their segment). The term "competition" can also be used to refer to the contest or tournament itself.

How can you find out the reasons why customers may be shopping with a competitor?
Q. I work at Superdug and have to answer this question. I have a general idea such as 'customers may prefer to go to Boots as they have a points card, and customers wish to build up their points' or ' another competitor may have better offers on particular products' etc... Just wondering if anyone can insight me further, Thank you xXx Your all fantastic, thank you so much. I love yahoo lol :) xXx

A. Go to the competing shops and look around. What do they have that you don't have? Are they open at different times? Don't look only at prices. Is the store clean and well organised? Is it easy to see what they have and find what you want? Is their site better than yours? Is transport (car park, bus stop) closer to the competitor than to you? Are the staff courteous and knowledgeable? Just make notes about what you think influences the customers' choice. If you decide to start talking to customers at the competing shop DO NOT say that you're from the competition! Say you're a business studies student.

How to win sales when your competitor(s) are in the running as well?
Q. Former sales job had little competition. Aside from giving them a cheaper price and/or badmouthing, what are some tricks/tactics that are used to win the sale against your competitor who is vying for the same sale. I was used to spending time on companies I know would close and tried to avoid "throwing darts at a board" and wasting my time. This is a situation when the prospect says,"Its between you and X"

A. There are no "tricks". Bad-mouthing your competition will not work. Sales is about building value, listening to your prospects, and giving them service, not about dropping price.

How is there democracy in trying to get a competitor to quit a race?
Q. Superdelegates IS a democracy. The DNC sets a process for election that involved both the people and superdelegates. It is in the rules. Kicking someone out is against the rules and the democratic process as set out by the DNC.

A. There is no democracy in it, nor is there democracy in not allowing two states' votes to count (We are the United States, are we not?). Super Delegates were formed with a stated purpose, and were supposed to vote their conscience, but now they are being told how they should vote, so, I don't see much democracy in that either. This election has really soured my opinion on the Democrat party in general, the way the party has treated Hillary Clinton (who is the best candidate, as far as I am concerned) has been despicable. People on YA compare her to Bill, well, Bill did some bad things as president, but he also did some really good ones too, but she is not her husband, she is a smart woman with a mind of her own, and I think that is what… [cont.]
