Combustion or burning is the sequence of exothermic chemical reactions between a fuel and an oxidant accompanied by the production of heat and conversion of chemical species. The release of heat can result in the production of light in the form of either glowing or a flame. Fuels of interest often include organic compounds (especially hydrocarbon) in the gas, liquid or solid phase. In a complete combustion reaction, a compound reacts with an oxidizing element, such as oxygen or fluorine, and the products are compounds of each element in the fuel with the oxidizing element. For example:
A simpler example can be seen in the combustion of hydrogen and oxygen, which is a commonly used reaction in rocket engines:
The result is water vapor. In the large majority of industrial applications of combustion and in fires, air is the source of oxygen (O2). In air, each kg (lbm) of oxygen is mixed with approximately 3.76 kg (lbm) of nitrogen. The resultant flue gas from the combustion will contain nitrogen:

GNU Free Documentation License Combustion of alcohols: relationship between heat energy produced and number of carbon atoms in the molecule? Q. I have found that there is a direct proportionality between the number of carbon atoms in alcohol molecules and the amount of heat energy produced in the combustion reaction. Why is this the case? Asked by kkkeri1 - Fri Oct 12 21:46:01 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Think about it. As the alcohol gets longer, there is more C & H to react with O2, and hence more heat given. If you take HOH as the first alcohol (I know, its water not an alcohol, but bear with me..), there is no heat realease because it does not burn. So C=0 no heat. Get to methanol and you are buring a CH2, i.e.HO-CH2-H, then for ethanol you have 2 CH2 etc. So each alcohol adds a CH2, and hnece the heat energy produced is proportional to C QED Answered by Mike W - Sat Oct 13 00:08:09 2007 What happened when the complete engine combustion not occured? Q. What really happened when the complete engine combustion didn't occur? What happened when the air and petrol in engine not mix in proper ratio? Answered by cutyards - Sun Feb 1 01:56:02 2009 How to build a small combustion furnace to burn black liquor of a pulp mill?
Q. Would like to learn how to build a small combustion furnace to burn black liquor of a small pulp mill that produce about 10m3 of black liquoir per day. At this stage we are not yet thinking of chemical recover. Thank you for your guidance. Asked by ttn - Wed Apr 26 19:03:27 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. First off, how combustible is this liquoir? How hot will it burn? You'll need to know in order to figure out what materials to use in the furnace. Secondly, does this liquid contain any heavy metals such as lead or mercury? It may be very unsafe to burn waste products of paper mills. You'll need to also contain the smoke as it may be full of harmful chemicals. You'll need an analysis of the liquoir and check with your local government regulators for restrictions. However, if all works out, you can start with an Oil furnace burner. It's designed to burn oil and should be able to burn your liquoir as long as it isn't too full of alcohol. A container with a check valve system and protective housing will be needed to hold the liquid and… [cont.] Answered by vmmhg - Wed May 3 11:33:15 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "combustion" The Peak Oil Crisis: Revisiting the Electric Car
