  1. (uncountable) The branch of natural science that deals with the composition and constitution of substances and the changes that they undergo as a consequence of alterations in the constitution of their molecules.
  2. (countable) An application of chemical theory and method to a particular substance.
    the chemistry of iron

Chemistry (the etymology of the word has been much disputed) is the science of matter and the changes it undergoes. The science of matter is also addressed by physics, but while physics takes a more general and fundamental approach, chemistry is more specialized, being concerned with the composition, behavior, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. It is a physical science which studies of various atoms, molecules, crystals and other aggregates of matter whether in isolation or combination, which incorporates the concepts of energy and entropy in relation to the spontaneity of chemical processes.

Disciplines within chemistry are traditionally grouped by the type of matter being studied or the kind of study. These include inorganic chemistry, the study of inorganic matter; organic chemistry, the study of organic (carbon based) matter; biochemistry, the study of substances found in biological organisms; physical chemistry, the study of chemical processes using physical concepts such as thermodynamics and quantum mechanics; and analytical chemistry, the analysis of material samples to gain an understanding of their chemical composition and structure. Many more specialized disciplines have emerged in recent years, e.g. neurochemistry the chemical study of the nervous system (see subdisciplines).

Q. what is [H3O] in 0.70M HCN? answer is 1.9x10^-5, how do you figure out?
Asked by Harmony S - Thu Mar 6 15:50:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You need Ka to solve it. My book (Zuhmdahl, 5th ed.) says it is 6.2 X 10^-10. HCN = H+ + CN- Let "X" equal [H+] and [CN-]. Ka = [H+][CN-] / [HCN] = 6.2 X 10^-10 X^2 / 0.70 = 6.2 X10^-10 X^2 = 4.34 X 10^-10 X = ( 4.34 X 10^-10)^0.5 X = 2.08 X 10^-5 So [H+] = [H3O+] = 2.08 X 10^-5 M The slight difference in answers is probably because your textbook has a different Ka value for HCN.

What chemistry principles should one study in their spare time?
Q. I understand that a broad and intricate knowledge of the basics are important, but I'm not at all sure what basics I should start with. My idea was to read through a general chemistry textbook, but it's turning out to be somewhat overwhelming. I'm looking to pursue a career in organic chemistry (organic chemistry textbooks are too specific and don't really allow for a broad understanding of the subject matter). I'm already taking chemistry courses at a university; the aim of this question, to restate, is to help me figure out where I should be concentrating in my spare time.

A. I am an inorganic chemist. I have a colleague who is a biological chemist. I once asked him, "What, besides biological chemistry, do you think is most important for your students to understand?" His answer? Physical chemistry. Besides inorganic chemistry, that's my answer too. Thermodynamics, kinetics, bonding. Not so much at the level of being able to derive thermodynamic relationships with partial derivatives, but having a sort of honors-level freshman chemistry understanding. Know order-of-magnitude numbers! How strong are typical bonds? How much energy is kT (or RT on a per mole basis). What is the energy range of visible light? Infrared radiation? NMR frequencies? What are typical bond lengths? etc... You'd be… [cont.]

What can I do with a chemistry major that will not require animal testing?
Q. I'd like to be a chemistry major but I want to go into a career that will not require animal testing. I also don't want to do it in college. I just love chemistry. What options do I have?
Asked by D - Tue Jul 27 22:11:41 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are so many answers to what you could do that there isn't room to list them here. There are very few jobs that require animal testing. The vast majority all related to the health field, and biology...not chemistry. The only chemistry animal testing job I can think of would be cosmetic design. The only "animal testing" I knew about in college was with frogs in a biology class. You really don't need to worry about animal testing if you go into chemistry. With chemistry, you could work in industry...say paints for cars. Refineries. Power plants. Rocket fuel. Bio fuels. batteries. There are a huge number of environmental jobs, where you'd basically be using chemistry to protect the environment(and animals that live there). … [cont.]
