From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An astronaut or cosmonaut is a person trained by a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft. While generally reserved for professional space travelers, the term is sometimes applied to anyone who travels into space, including scientists, politicians, journalists, and tourists. Until 2003, astronauts were sponsored and trained exclusively by governments, either by the military, or by civilian space agencies. With the sub-orbital flight of the privately-funded SpaceShipOne in 2004, a new category of astronaut was created: the commercial astronaut. From Wikipedia under the

I asked this question when I was younger and in school, but nobody ever gave me a clear answer. I am curious as to what happens when astronauts use the restroom in space and how that works. Diapers can provide a short term solution (a few hours), but a specially designed toilet is included in the space station and shuttle. The toilet basically uses air flow to repalce gravity. Waste is sucked down into the toilet. You can't store the waste on a vehicle that stays up as long as the space station does. Eventually, you have to dump it off the space station and it eventually reenters the Earth's atmosphere. Fortunately, the space station is travelling at over 17,000 mph, as is the waste dumped out of the space station. At that speed, human waste will quickly burn up in the atmosphere. A short radio piece from NPR on the subject is below. Answered by Bob G - Thu Nov 1 07:50:19 2007 Why would astronauts have to leave Mars within days or else wait years to travel back to Earth?
Q. If astronauts ever made it to Mars from Earth the journey would take 6 months each way. Once on Mars they would need to leave either within days or wait years to return to Earth. Why? Asked by Alley - Sun Jan 13 07:21:51 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Any human mission to Mars would be intended to travel in the short period every 26 months where Mars' and Earth's orbits are the closest. If astronauts only carried enough supplies for the shortest route (as they would) it would be imperative that they leave within the short departure window that there is.
