An alphabet is a standardized set of letters — basic written symbols or graphemes — each of which roughly represents a phoneme in a spoken language, either as it exists now or as it was in the past. There are other systems, such as logographies, in which each character represents a word, morpheme, or semantic unit, and syllabaries, in which each character represents a syllable. Alphabets are classified according to how they indicate vowels:
The word "alphabet" came into Middle English from the Late Latin word Alphabetum, which in turn originated in the Ancient Greek Αλφάβητος Alphabetos, from alpha and beta, the first two letters of the Greek alphabet. Alpha and beta in turn came from the first two letters of the Phoenician alphabet, and meant ox and house respectively. How do you start teaching your kids to read and understand the alphabet? I have seen other parents at a group i go to showing their kids letters, and the kid tells them the letter. How do i start teaching them the alphabet and how to reconise letters? i find reading difficult and i read slow, if i start them reading earlier will it be easier for them? When is the best age to teach kids this? Q. How did they decide on alpha, foxtrot, zulu, etc to replace the alphabet letters? Yes but why have they picked those particular words for? Asked by Le T ur pe an e - Sun Mar 1 04:50:04 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. The phonetic alphabet has changed over the years. For instance, the letter B was BOY until 1927 and was changed to BAKER during WWII. It was changed to BRAVO in 1957. The reason we have the current designations is because audio researchers decided these words would be the one most distinctive of that particular letter and least likely to be confused with other letters. Example: charlie for C and EASY for E sounded too similar so E was changed to ECHO. Answered by wroockee - Sun Mar 1 05:16:26 2009 How many combinations can the English alphabet make?
