Related termsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An airport is a location where aircraft such as fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and blimps take off and land. Aircraft may be stored or maintained at an airport. An airport consists of at least one surface such as a runway, a helipad, or water for takeoffs and landings, and often includes buildings such as hangars and terminal buildings. Larger airports may have fixed base operator services, seaplane docks and ramps, air traffic control, passenger facilities such as restaurants and lounges, and emergency services. A military airport is known as an airbase or air station. The terms airfield, airstrip, and aerodrome may also be used to refer to airports, and the terms heliport, seaplane base, and STOLport refer to airports dedicated exclusively to helicopters, seaplanes, or short takeoff and landing aircraft. In some jurisdictions, the term airport is used where the facility is licensed as such by the relevant government organization (e.g. the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transport Canada). Elsewhere the distinction is one of general appearance. Other jurisdictions define an airport by its having the customs offices etc expected of a port, though the more general term is airport of entry. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What airport would you recommend for a layover? Q. Which is an easier airport to negotiate through for a 15 year old first-time airplane traveler? I have the choice of flying through Charlotte/Douglas Airport or Dulles Intl. Airport. Thanks Thanks, OSU. It's really not that hard. Asked by YungBeast33 - Sat Jul 11 22:10:04 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Luckily, I've been to both. I find Charlotte much easier to navigate, although both are relatively small. Charlotte is slightly smaller however, and the terminals are layed out in an organized pattern. Once, I was delayed returning my rental car, and I was forced to hurry through Charlotte. I made my flight because it was so easy to get through. I do not have a similar story to compare to Dulles, but I was able to make my flight in Charlotte even with that delay. I appreciate a 15 year-old using perfect grammar and everything by the way, there are so many teens on here who type so unorganized making it almost like a code to read. Answered by OSU Buckeyes - Sat Jul 11 22:17:09 2009 In an Airport, where would the Aircrafts park if all the parking gates are full? Q. If all the gates are full, for example gate one to seventeen are all full, would the aircrafts go to any nearest airport or do they have to do something? Asked by Kool AzN - Mon Jul 16 15:36:24 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. If they are anticipating a short delay, the airplane will wait for the gate to be opened up... otherwise, the airplane will go over to a "remote parking" area where the pilots can park the airplane *close* to where they want it (without the help of a marshaller) and the passengers will be taken to the airport via shuttle busses, or somthing similar... Answered by ALOPILOT - Mon Jul 16 21:24:23 2007 What determines which airlines and flights are available at an airport?
Q. I've always thought it depends on the deman of the people whom use that particular airport the most and the cost of the airline to use gates at the airport. Is there any other determining factor or factors? I always wondered especially when the airport you use loses flights or airlines and while those flights had good numbers of people then is must be the cost. Delta used to have a hub at DFW for years & years...one day they rolled over and said "uncle" to American, just have a few flights now compared to the hundreds they had.
