It developed by gradual variations on the majuscule (capital) form. In handwriting, it was common to start the arc to the left of the vertical stroke, resulting in a serif at the top of the arc. It should not be out for more than an hour. If the milk feels warm, throw it out, since bacteria are already starting to grow. If you do decide to save it, however, use you judgement. Leave it in the fridge for a day or so and do not drink it. If the milk smells sour after a day, throw it out!! But if it smells fine, then it most likely is. But to be safe, I would just toss it.
