Employment is a contract between two parties, one being the employer and the other being the employee. An employee may be defined as: "A person in the service of another under any contract of hire, express or implied, oral or written, where the employer has the power or right to control and direct the employee in the material details of how the work is to be performed." Black's Law Dictionary page 471 (5th ed. 1979). In a commercial setting, the employer conceives of a productive activity, generally with the intention of generating a profit, and the employee contributes labour to the enterprise, usually in return for payment of wages. Employment also exists in the public, non-profit and household sectors. To the extent that employment or the economic equivalent is not universal, unemployment exists. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Employment" How does self-employment tax work for Sole Proprietorship? Q. What happens if you make $20,000 through your full time job, and $0 through self employment? Do you pay $0 for the self employment tax as a self proprietor? Or, do you still have to pay using $20,000 as the total income? Please help me someone. Thanks. Asked by Jason L - Wed Jun 4 03:11:38 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. It's like this. If you are employed in such a way that social security and income taxes are withheld from your paycheck, you pay half the social security taxes out of your paycheck, and your employer pays another half of your social security taxes. Social security is a regressive tax, by the way. It only comes out of income from working, not interest or dividends or anything like that. And once you have made and paid 7.65% social security taxes on $102,000 of your wages, salaries, and tips in 2008, you only have to pay the medicare tax (1.45%) for the rest of the year. So the poor actually pay a larger percentage of their income in social security taxes than the rich do, even though the poor are probably more likely to die before they… [cont.] Answered by Beckee - Wed Jun 4 03:43:56 2008 Temporary work through employment agencies. What are the consequences of leaving the agency for the employer? Q. I have temporary work through an employment agency. There is a possibility that the company have permanent positions but I have been told that the agency will charge the company if I start to work for them directly. Does any anyone know the rules around this? Asked by markkaz - Fri Sep 4 13:58:52 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. If the company hired you through the temp agency, they know what the rules and ramifications are for hiring you as a regular employee. If they offer you the job, take it and let them deal with the employment agency. The agency is just protecting themselves from losing the revenue they get by having you work through their agency. Companies pay temp agencies for the employees that are hired as long as they are in temporary status. And, this is much cheaper than paying for all of your benefits as a regular employee. It's also a lot easier for them to dismiss you for any reason if either you don't work out or they just don't have the work for you any more. If they feel that they want you on as a regular employee, they can then invest that… [cont.] Answered by Paul in San Diego - Fri Sep 4 14:17:49 2009 How can I go about verifying employment for a potential tenant?
