An image (from Latin imago) is an artifact, for example a two-dimensional picture, that has a similar appearance to some subject—usually a physical object or a person.

Images may be two-dimensional, such as a photograph, screen display, and as well as a three-dimensional, such as a statue. They may be captured by optical devices—such as cameras, mirrors, lenses, telescopes, microscopes, etc. and natural objects and phenomena, such as the human eye or water surfaces.

The word image is also used in the broader sense of any two-dimensional figure such as a map, a graph, a pie chart, or an abstract painting. In this wider sense, images can also be rendered manually, such as by drawing, painting, carving, rendered automatically by printing or computer graphics technology, or developed by a combination of methods, especially in a pseudo-photograph.

A volatile image is one that exists only for a short period of time. This may be a reflection of an object by a mirror, a projection of a camera obscura, or a scene displayed on a cathode ray tube. A fixed image, also called a hard copy, is one that has been recorded on a material object, such as paper or textile by photography or digital processes.

A mental image exists in an individual's mind: something one remembers or imagines. The subject of an image need not be real; it may be an abstract concept, such as a graph, function, or "imaginary" entity. For example, Sigmund Freud claimed to have dreamt purely in aural-images of dialogues. The development of synthetic acoustic technologies and the creation of sound art have led to a consideration of the possibilities of a sound-image made up of irreducible phonic substance beyond linguistic or musicological analysis.

Can I use images of presidential candidates to make a t-shirt on CafePress?
Q. I've seen dozens of t-shirts for sale on CafePress with modified images of the presidential candidates. Is it ok to use their image and likenesses in this way? I always thought if you used someone's face on a product you owe them some sort of royalty or you need to contract to use their likeness.

A. You can use images/art of US political figures for profit at Cafepress or in another venture without owing the political figure royalty. However, as far as photos go the person who took the photo has the rights/ownership of the given image. So you would need to take your own photo yourself or get permission from the person who took the image if you want to use it for commercial purposes. The only issue is that some people like Arnold Schwarzenegger who was an actor who became a politician. You can sell products with him now but if he leaves office they in theory you would need to stop selling these products. Also, when in doubt about any of these things you really should contact a trademark/copyright attorney just to be sure.

How come you can sell some images but not others?
Q. Michael Jordan is suing a store for using his image without permission. How can paparazzi sell images of people and how can people sell images of Obama and whatnot without his permission. I don't understand the laws regarding this.

A. Taxreff - I have read a lot of rubbish on here before but I have to say your version of copyright must take the prize for the most ignorant and incorrect that I have seen in a long time. There is no difference between editorial and commercial or any other use under copyright law. Copyright is simply the right of the copyright holder to copy, display and distribute their works. "copyright laws do not apply to editorial use". that is a very dangerous statement to make. If I take a picture and someone else publishes it without my permission then that is a breach of copyright no matter what context it is published in. So copyright law obviously applies. "If I sold that same photo to a travel agency to use in an ad to book trips to the… [cont.]
