The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite and the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System. The average centre-to-centre distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,403 kilometres (238,857 mi), about thirty times the diameter of the Earth. The common centre of mass of the system (the barycentre) is located at about 1,700 kilometres (1,100 mi)—a quarter the Earth's radius—beneath the surface of the Earth. The Moon makes a complete orbit around the Earth every 27.3 days (the orbital period), and the periodic variations in the geometry of the Earth–Moon–Sun system are responsible for the phases of the moon, which repeat every 29.5 days (the synodic period).

The Moon's diameter is 3,474 kilometres (2,159 mi), a little more than a quarter of that of the Earth. Thus, the Moon's surface area is less than a tenth that of the Earth (about a quarter the Earth's land area, approximately as large as Russia, Canada, and the United States combined), and its volume is about 2 percent that of Earth. The pull of gravity at its surface is about 17 percent of that at the Earth's surface.

The Moon is the only celestial body to which human beings have performed a manned landing. While the Soviet Union's Luna programme was the first to reach the Moon with unmanned spacecraft, the NASA Apollo program achieved the only manned missions to date, beginning with the first manned lunar mission by Apollo 8 in 1968, and six manned lunar landings between 1969 and 1972- the first being Apollo 11 in 1969. Human exploration of the Moon temporarily ceased with the conclusion of the Apollo program, although a few robotic landers and orbiters have been sent to the Moon since that time. The U.S. has committed to return to the moon by 2018.

Can the full moon really start my labor, or break my water?
Q. I am due January 17th and Im already 2 cm dialted according to my last ob visit on Wednesday...Now I know the full moon is coming this Sunday and where I live in NJ we are also expecting a big snowstorm Saturday until Sunday... A. Statistically, more women give birth during a full moon than any other of its cycles. This is a relic of genetic predisposition that comes from our genetic ancestors who gained a survival benefit from giving birth during certain cycles of the moon. For example, turtles lay their eggs so that their hatchlings will be birthed during the highest of high tides (caused by a phase of the moon) so they will have a higher chance of surviving.

What effect does the moon have on ocean fishing?
Q. I live in southern California, and have been out on alot of half day to 2 day trips. I'm planning on going out on a 3/4 day trip out to Catalina Island for calico bass, and yellowtail, as the bite is starting to heat up with the weather. I follow the fish reports, and it's been hit or miss lately(it's a little early in the season). The weather is pretty constant now, so thats not an issue. I was wondering if I could improve my odds of having a good trip by going out on a certain day of the moon cycle.

A. The moon can affect some fish, but not others. It seems that white seabass bite better for a few days before a full moon, and bluefin tuna seem to, too -- but other fish don't seem to care that much. One theory I heard was that when the night is dark, gamefish can find baitfish by the disturbances in the plankton at night (they glow when disturbed), so that when the moon is full, the fish have a harder time feeding at night, so they continue to feed into the daytime. Another theory is that when the moon is full, the tides are higher, so the currents are stronger, and it's well known that fish feed better when a current is flowing. When I was a kid, I actually kept track of the daily fish counts and the moon phases and the water… [cont.]

Would a Scorpio moon person be darker and more brooding than a Scorpio sun person?
Q. Scorpio falls when it is in the moon. Well when a sign is in it's exalting planet, most of the positive traits of that sign increases and most of the negative traits decease. When a sign is in the planet in which it falls, most of that signs negative traits increase and most of the positive traits decrease. Well most of Scorpio's negative traits revolve around things such as violent, destructive, brooding, manipulative, very slow to forgive others, emotionally intense, unyielding, and malicious...Since Scorpio falls when it is in the moon, would a Scorpio moon person be much darker and possibly more sinister than a Scorpio sun person?

A. I believe so; however, how far a person takes destructive thoughts/behavior, is based on more things that just this. What I've noticed is Scorpio moons read into what you say, rather than listen to what you are telling them. Overly suspicious, which to me, would be very draining to themselves and to the people they are dealing with. Scorpio rising/ Scorpio sun/Gemini moon
