A rocket engine or simply "rocket" is a jet engine that uses only propellant mass for forming its high speed propulsive jet. Rocket engines are reaction engines and obtain thrust in accordance with Newton's third law. Since they need no external material to form their jet, rocket engines can be used for spacecraft propulsion as well as terrestrial uses, such as missiles. Most rocket engines are internal combustion engines, although non combusting forms also exist.

Rocket engines as a group, have the highest exhaust velocities, are by far the lightest, and are the most energy efficient (at least at very high speed) of all types of jet engines. However, for the thrust they give, due to the high exhaust velocity and relatively low specific energy of rocket propellant, they consume propellant very rapidly.

Terminology

Chemical rockets are rockets powered by exothermic chemical reactions of the propellant.

Rocket motor is a synonymous term with rocket engine that usually refers to solid rocket engines.

Liquid rockets use one or more liquid propellants that are held in tanks prior to burning.

Hybrid rockets have a solid propellant in the combustion chamber and a second liquid or gas propellant is added to permit it to burn.

Thermal rockets are rockets where the propellant is inert, but is heated by a power source such as solar or nuclear power or beamed energy.

Is it possible to make rocket engine from celluloid ?
Q. I heard that in 1950-is rocket modeler produced rocket engines from celluloid but I don't know what is necessary beside celluloid to make such an engine work.

A. You could... it would probably be a more special kind of nitrocellulose. But the specific impulse of such an engine would be very small. Aluminum powder and ammonium perchlorate are much better.

Where can you buy a rocket engine?
Q. I live in Reno NV and where can you buy a rocket engine. 89511 please make the store close.

A. I'm guessing you mean model rocket engines? Wal-Mart and Meijer (if they exist out there) sometimes carry model rocket engines near their toy/model sections. Hobby Lobby (once again, if they exist out there) is a great source for rocket engines. If those aren't available, and there are not local hobby shops, turn to the internet. There are several online vendors for smaller model rocket motors. www.hobbylinc.com is one that comes to mind.

How can i fix a seized up Pocket rocket engine?
Q. Its a 49cc Pocket rocket, And i think i seized it up by not putting enough oil in it. But i cant get it unseized ive been putting wd-40 in the spark plug hole but its not letting up. Do you know of any other ways i can get it unseized?

A. HI Usually the fix would be a rebuild... as the barrings on the crank are most likely toast. Putting oil in the cylinders would only work if there had been water in the cylinder and it rusted up.. But I believe your problem lie's in the crank and rod barrings. the only fix for that is to take it apart and have the crank/rods machined and new barrings installed good luck tim
