The modern game of tennis originated in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century as "lawn tennis" which has heavy connections to various field/lawn games as well as to the ancient game of real tennis. After its creation, tennis spread throughout the upper-class English-speaking population before spreading around the world. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including people in wheelchairs. In the United States, there is a collegiate circuit organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

The rules of tennis have changed very little since the 1890s. Two exceptions are that from 1908 to 1960 the server had to keep one foot on the ground at all times, and then the adoption of the tie-break in the 1970s. A recent addition to professional tennis has been the adoption of electronic review technology coupled with a point challenge system, which allows a player to challenge the line (or chair) umpire's call of a point.

Tennis enjoys millions of recreational players and is also a hugely popular worldwide spectator sport, especially the four Grand Slam tournaments (sometimes referred to as the "majors"): the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

What is the entry criteria to play Tennis ITF futures tournamnents?
Q. I have no ATP ranking and not a pro tennis player. I know that to start the tennis career, we can start with futures tournaments. But on what basis can a person be qulaified to futures?? Is it mandatory to have ATP ranking to qualify for futures? If so, how can i start my pro tennis career?
Asked by muk.mukesh - Fri Apr 4 14:47:11 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Okay. Almost all guys start in futures. It really is the beginning of the beginning. So obviously if you start in futures, then you're not going to have an ATP ranking. You get that from playing futures. Have you played ITF junior tournaments? It also depends on how old you are. You have to get permission from your country's tennis federation for them to allow you to play international tournaments... It's really not as complicated as it seems. But I just don't know what tournaments you've already played ect, so its hard to answer. Sorry bout that.

Why does a tennis player throw the original ball away after a 1st serve fault?
Q. In a tennis match, if the player serving makes a fault by hitting the net and the ball bounces back to him, he tends to throw it away to the ball boy rather than use that ball again for the second serve. Why is that? Does he have to use another ball for the second serve?
Asked by David H - Thu Feb 5 20:17:37 2009 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. because you already have a second ball ready for the second serve-why play with an extra ball in your skirt if you don't have to? Now if the serve was a let I pick it back up. also, it's easier to throw it away bc picking it up looks dumb and is out of my ritual. No one has to, it's just a habit by most players.

What is the minimum height required to become a tennis player?
Q. I'm really determined about becoming a tennis player. I'm really full of talent in tennis playing and have very good skills. My height is only 4'10 at the age of 12 now. Do you think i can become a tennis player? At this rate will i reach at least the minimum height needed? I really will appreciate your answering me to this question I've been pondering over for many days. Thanks!

A. You can be a tennis player no matter what height you are. All you need is to be good at tennis. And you will still grow alot if your only 12. Just keep playing tennis alot and make sure you eat properly.

Tennis is a game played between either two players ("singles") or two teams of two players ("doubles"). Players use a stringed racquet to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over a net into the opponent's court. To correctly play the game the ball must fall in certain areas of the opponents court. The goal of the game is to not allow the opponent to throw the ball back into the correct area.

  • I honestly don't understand it, because it's somebody hitting a ball to where you can't get it, but you want to get it. I think they should rethink it.
  • I have these two sayings, “Champions adjust” and “Pressure is a priviledge”. Tennis teaches you about those things. When you're playing a tennis match, you can't say, “Stop, I want to do another take”, or “Can I play that over?” That's the way sports are.

"To see Good Tennis! What divine joy Can fill our leisure, or our minds employ? Let other people play at other things; The King of Games is still the Game of Kings"
