Private spaceflight is flight above 100 km (62 mi) Earth altitude conducted by and paid for by an entity other than a government. In the early decades of the Space Age, the government space agencies of the Soviet Union and United States pioneered space technology augmented by collaboration with affiliated design bureaus in the USSR and private companies in the US. The European Space Agency was formed in 1975, largely following the same model of space technology development. Later on, large defense contractors began to develop and operate space launch systems, derived from government rockets and commercial satellites. Private spaceflight in Earth orbit includes communications satellites, satellite television, satellite radio, astronaut transport and sub-orbital and orbital space tourism. Recently, entrepreneurs have begun designing and deploying competitive space systems to the national-monopoly governmental systems of the early decades of the space age. Successes to date include flying suborbital spaceplanes and launching lightweight orbital rockets. Planned private spaceflights beyond Earth orbit include solar sailing prototypes, deep space burial and personal spaceflights around the Moon. A private orbital habitat prototype is already in Earth orbit, with larger versions to follow.

Should America regulate manned commercial spaceflight?
Q. In late December 2012, the world could change dramatically. No, not that. Congress passed a law in 2004 saying essentially that the FAA, which regulates commercial space launches, should not put any regulations in place to address the safety of crew or spaceflight participants. (They're not called passengers, because the government doesn't want to imply the level of safety you could expect from a commercial airplane.) Part of the intent of that law was to let the industry develop on its own. On December 23rd, 2012, that provision is set to expire. To date, there has been one private manned launch vehicle, SpaceShipOne, and it flew into suborbital space three times, carrying only a pilot on each flight; it is now retired. SpaceShipTwo… [cont.]

A. Hell no. Anyone who chooses to fly into space on what they know full well is a very experimental vehicle also knows that it's dangerous, and that they are risking their lives. How much danger an individual wishes to assume is 100% his own business, and the government has zero business interfering. Richard

Did I READ this right?
Q. <<< ..Xcor hopes to make its spaceflights available for considerably less than those by Virgin Galactic, which has taken 85,000 reservations at $200,000 each. [That s 17 trillion dollars] Greason said a central mission of his company is to bring down the cost of spaceflight "because affordable access to space for everyone means far more than breathtaking views and the freedom of weightlessness. It means unlocking the material and energy resources and economic opportunities of our solar system." >>> 17 Trillion dollars for a trip to to the top of the roller coaster? I'm NOT the most fervrent liberal in the pack but can't we find a better use for 17 trillion dollars in PRIVATE money? Looks like 17 Trillion to me. 17 in the 10th and… [cont.]

A. That is not 17 trillion.. 85000 x 2000 = 17000 Which is 17 billion. (Using the, 1000 million, definition of a billion) EDIT: I have no idea what you think a trillion is.. however it is considered one of these two: - 10^12, or 10^18
