New Horizons is a NASA robotic spacecraft mission currently en route to the dwarf planet Pluto. It is expected to be the first spacecraft to fly by and study Pluto and its moons, Charon, Nix, and Hydra. NASA may also approve flybys of one or more other Kuiper belt objects.

New Horizons was launched on January 19, 2006 directly into an Earth-and-solar-escape trajectory. It had an Earth-relative velocity of about 16.26 km/s (58,536 km/h; 36,373 mph) after its last engine shut down. Thus, it left Earth at the fastest launch speed ever recorded for a man-made object. It flew by Jupiter on February 28, 2007 at 5:43:40 UTC and Saturn's orbit on June 8, 2008 at 10:00 UTC. It will arrive at Pluto on July 14, 2015 and then continue into the Kuiper belt.

What newer game is like the old KOIE Uncharted Waters, New Horizons?
Q. I loved playing the game New Horizons on the super nintendo, but have not been able to find any new games similer to it.

A. Wow... I thought I was the only person who played that game. Unfortunately, I have never found another game anything like Uncharted Waters... the trading was a blast (I remember having some KILLER gold routes). Let me know if you find anything! p.s. I still have the original box and disks for that game!

Why didn't they send New Horizons closer to Jupiter?
Q. Pluto is far away! They need all the speed they can get. Everything is newer, faster and more gangster now so why didn't they just snap it around the planet so close that it almost touches the clouds? They did it before with the Galileo probe flying past Earth (300 km altitude). It would bend the spacecraft trajectory much more but sowhat, Jupiter only takes a few years to move significantly along it's orbit, so they should be able to find a right launch window right? Also, why don't they use the inner planets more, gravitational assists only add the planet's orbital motion. Therefore, shouldn't they rather use the faster orbiting planets like Mars?

A. The speed of a planet's movement has nothing to do with gravity assist. Gravity assist depends on a planet's mass. The greater its mass, the greater its gravity. Gravitational acceleration is why a gravity assist is called a gravity assist. Hence, why they fly by Jupiter and not an inner planet. New Horizons was the fastest spacecraft ever launched (well at take-off anyway). Deep Space One achieved 10.3 km/s not too long ago. However, new Horizon will one day be moving faster than that. Orbital dynamics and trajectories depend on perfect timing, and insanely involved math and physics principles. Also, in order to create the lightest spacecraft possible with the absolute most functionality you have to optimize a trajectory that uses the… [cont.]
