Laika (Russian: Лайка, literally meaning "Barker") was a Soviet space dog (c. 1954–November 3, 1957) who became the first animal to orbit the Earth and the first orbital death. The technology to deorbit had not yet been developed, so there was no expectation for survival. Little was known about the impact of spaceflight on living things at the time Laika's mission was launched. Some scientists believed humans would be unable to survive the launch or the conditions of outer space, so engineers viewed flights by non-human animals as a necessary precursor to human missions. Laika, a stray, originally named Kudryavka (Russian: Кудрявка Little Curly), underwent training with two other dogs, and was eventually chosen as the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 that was launched into outer space on November 3, 1957. Laika likely died within hours after launch from overheating, possibly due to a failure of the central R-7 sustainer to separate from the payload. The true cause and time of her death was not made public until 2002; instead, it was widely reported that she died when her oxygen ran out, or (as the Soviets initially insisted) she was euthanised prior to oxygen depletion. However, the experiment proved that a living passenger could survive being launched into orbit and endure weightlessness. It paved the way for human spaceflight and provided scientists with some of the first data on how living organisms react to spaceflight environments. On April 11, 2008, Russian officials unveiled a monument to Laika. A small monument in her honor was built near the military research facility in Moscow which prepared Laika's flight to space. It features a dog standing on top of a rocket. From Wikipedia under the

According to a NASA document, Laika was placed in the satellite on October 31, 1957 three days before the start of the mission.[5] The temperatures at the launch site were extremely cold at that time of year, so a hose connected to a heater was used to keep her container warm. Two assistants were assigned to keep a constant watch on Laika before launch. Just prior to liftoff on November 3, 1957 from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Laika's fur was sponged in a weak alcohol solution and carefully groomed. Iodine was painted onto areas where sensors would be placed to monitor her bodily functions.[12] At peak acceleration Laika's respiration increased to between three and four times the pre-launch rate.[5] The sensors showed her heart rate was 103… [cont.] Answered by GingerBear - Tue Oct 30 01:18:01 2007 Is it true that the Russians sent a dog to the moon? Q. I think Laika was his name. I've seen old film footage of the dog in the cosmo gear and bubble helmet. I think a chimp was also sent - all before the first man was sent, I think to test how a body would respond to space conditions. Asked by simple - Sun Aug 3 17:21:55 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Not to the moon, but there have been animals in outer space. The Russians send a dog, Laika, up, to see if space was actually survivable. NASA later send a chimp up, to see if humans could still function there. Ham the chimp made it back, as did his follower, Enos. Laika the dog was less fortunate, she died after a few hours due to overheating. "Fun" fact, Enos, the second chimp in space taught NASA it was a very bad idea to have a meal before launch. Answered by Alcari - Sun Aug 3 17:40:02 2008 Laika - how to pronounce?

No provisions were made for her return, and she died in orbit within hours from stress and overheating. Sourced
